St. Patrick's Primary School's hurling team made history this past Wednesday when they won the All County Championship for the third year in a row at Glenavy GAC.
The boys, who play their club hurling for Oisin Glenariffe CLG, competed in the All County Finals having won the North Antrim title for the third time in as many years.
They were faced with a determined Mary Queen of Peace (Glenravel) team in the semi-finals, who had won the South West section. The St. Patrick's boys played some skilful hurling and created some memorable scores to take a lead into half-time. The Glenariffe men continued their dominance in the second half with many of the players contributing to the scoring and earning their team a place in the final.
Bunscoil Phobal Feirste provided a stern challenge in the final and made the boys from St. Patrick's Primary School work for the title of All County Champions. The teams were evenly matched and they were separated by only two points at half-time. Early scores in the second half settled the Glenariffe nerves and they began to build a lead which enabled them to display the impressive style of hurling that had brought them to the final. Despite the best efforts of the Belfast school, they were unable to prevent St. Patrick's Glenariffe from winning their third All County Championship in a row.
St. Patrick's Primary School is the first primary school to win three All County hurling championships in a row. This is an exceptional achievement and one that may never be repeated. The school is very proud of the boys and would like to acknowledge the commitment shown by the Oisin Glenariffe CLG to develop these young hurlers.
Hopefully there will be many more successes for them to come as they progress through their hurling careers.
